Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 June, 2009. After defeating Jay Davies in the Quarterfinals and Manuel Selman in the Semi’s, Gabriel Villaran from Peru proved to everyone he was the man to beat. Villaran put everything on the line in the final charging the giant waves on offer to take out fellow Peruvian surfer Alvaro Malpartida and walk away with his first ever ASP WQS winners trophy.
“I feel at home in Arica,” Villaran said after the final. “They always received me and supported me with open arms. I feel sorry to not have been able to share this experience with my friend Ramon Navarro from Pichilemu. I dedicate this triumph to my mom and all the Ariqueans”.
By riding the FCS system Villaran was able to fine tune his equipment to suit the conditions which ultimately played a role in securing the victory. Villaran commented, «I use the R-2 for high performance in my shortboards, they are really fast and respond really well, I like them for doing big carves and airs”.
The FCS R-2 was designed in conjunction with Rusty Preisendorfer and Curtis Hesselgrave. It features Performance Core technology to offer the feeling of a traditional glass fin, but with the performance elements of reduced weight.
The moderate sweep angle and medium to large surface area makes this fin ideal for a power surfing. A smaller inner core template is used in the construction of this fin to ensure more fiberglass and stiffness through the tip; this translates into a very responsive flex pattern. Villaran went on to say; “I decided to use the R-2 in my 6’6” gun because I know they will give me hold and enough speed to come out of deep barrels».
